— Bastiaan de Haas, born in 1999 in Gouda, has been intrigued with film from the age of 9. As a Audiovisual Design graduate at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, Bastiaan holds a degree in the Minor New Earth, where he explored the intersection of sustainability and humanity's coexistence with their ecosystem.

Bastiaan's artistic vision is rooted in his fascination with human behavior, ecology, geology & history and the intricate connections between them. Now based in Rotterdam, Bastiaan’s work extends beyond film into fields like photography and graphic design. Yet, it is film that continually draws him back, allowing him to combine his diverse skill set and broad interests into visual narratives.

His directorial debut "In Onze Natuur", is an exploration of the fragile relationship between humanity and their natural surroundings. Revealing the struggles and absurdities within our quest for harmony. The film, a hybrid of documentary and dance, has been showcased at various film festivals, earning recognition, including the Winner Best Short Movie award at the Cinema e Ambiente Avezzano 2022 in Italy.

Bastiaan’s style leans towards simplicity, utilizing wide angles and natural light to capture the beauty of life itself. Embracing analog styles and drawing inspiration from historic contexts, notably the distinct visual characteristics of different eras, add a distinctive touch to his work.

His upcoming documentary, "Un Bel Nulla", is a portrait of a small Italian village in the Abruzzo region, exploring the generational imbalance that foreshadows its eventual abandonment. The film, entirely in Italian, tells the emotional stories of the villagers. Through highlighting the beauty found in their close-knit community, we get a glimpse of what life is like in a village that knows it won't exist soon.

Rather than imposing a specific message, Bastiaan’s work invites audiences to find their own meanings. His films are a reflection of his enthusiasm and fascination for his surroundings, often combined with a hint of absurdism and comedy. He aims to make viewers more aware of their surroundings and find joy in everyday life and culture.
